Winter sun family holidays

Looking for autumn or winter sun? We have found some of the best and most affordable destinations right here.

Finding an autumn or winter getaway in the sun is becoming more and more popular. We have done the research and come up with some incredible holidays from the top winter sun destinations.

Finding a break during the winter months is becoming more and more popular.

Egypt

Egypt has been a popular holiday destination with British tourists for many years and we can see why. The hotel complexes offer so much and the family friendly hotel facilities are easy to find. With highs of 25-28 degrees centigrade in November and December, we know this is the perfect break away if you really want to feel the heat. The climate in Egypt in sub tropical - the coolest month being January, also tends to be the driest so it depends what you need for your winter getaway. December tends to be the wettest month. If Egypt is on your travel hit list, the summer months may just be too hot to handle - reaching up to 39/40 degrees centigrade. The nighttime temperatures can plummet below freezing in the winter, so the autumn months may be the best time for you to visit, although evenings can feel chilly because of the contrast between day and night temperatures.

Our hotel top pick:

Right on the Red Sea, this gorgeous hotel offers you a lot for your money. With all inclusive deals for less that £700 per person, this is the perfect place to get some much needed R&R in the winter months.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an archipelago and island country in the central Atlantic Ocean, consisting of ten volcanic islands.

The official language is Portugese, but being just off the coast of Africa, it has very much its own climate and cultural influences from the continent it sits in - Africa. The rainfall from November through to March is very low, so these are perfect months to visit the island. With average highs of 26 to 30 degrees in November and December, it comes in on a similar playing field to Egypt on the temperature front but tends to be slightly breezier. December is probably the least rainy month, but after rainy season the island is lush and green so can also be the prettiest month to visit too! Holidays here can often be cheaper than visiting Spain, only slightly further away than the Canaries and with its azure blue waters the beaches are beautiful. Quoted to be, "Africa's answer to the Caribbean" this is a must for those looking for some winter sun.

With panoramic views of endless oceans, this hotel has an amazing outlook and a vast expanse of soft sand. This hotel is five star luxury on a three star budget at under £700 per person. The all inclusive is fully 24 hour, and the vast outdoor area has a range of facilities for you to enjoy including a fresh water swimming pool, three salt water swimming pools, a Jacuzzi, Hammam, gym, solarium-terrace and spa with a range of different treatments and massages. Everything you could need to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Travelling with children? This is not an issue at the Riu Touareg, as the hotel has a kids club, mini disco and two heated children's pools.

Tenerife

This is the largest of the Canary Islands and is just 20okm off the coast of Africa making it the perfect destination for some winter sun. Tenerife is warm and dry in the winter, making it a popular destination for British tourists all year round. The island has volcanic black sand beaches as well as mountainous terrain giving it a variety of activities from watersports to hiking. There are microclimates on the island, so the south side tends to see less rain than the north (on average). If you like hiking, then Anaga in the north is a good place to head to. If you prefer hotter temperatures December is your month, but it tends to be slightly wetter than February on the whole - although February can be colder so you may want to weigh up what is more important while you escape the winter blues.

Our hotel top pick:

This hotel has the most breathtaking views of rugged mountains and endless oceans - enough to entertain you for a week. But that's not all, it also has an incredible array of activities and entertainment included. Just a twenty minute stroll to the quaint seaside town of Los Gigantes rounds off the hotels location although we would recommend a taxi if you don't fancy a stroll back up the hill. Tenerife taxi's are reasonable so this is an affordable transport option on the island.

Lanzarote

This island is another in the Canaries that has beautiful beaches and perfect winter temperatures that may even draw you in for a dip. The beaches of Papagayo, Famara, Quemada or Francesa (in La Graciosa) offer the most varied landscapes on the island. And, since the winter is quieter you will have more of the beach to enjoy for yourself. If there is rain in December it is usually short-lived. You are looking at around 18 up to 22 ish degrees centigrade which is lovely holiday weather for most, especially those who have young children or those family members who can't handle the heat. There are lots of things to do on Lanzarote, but if you are into animals a trip to Lobos island is a must. You can do dolphin spotting or see all the rare birds and reptiles on the island.

This hotel has a beautiful lagoon-like pool surrounded by chalky white bungalows giving it a real village feel. There is an American, Italian restaurants as well as a buffet - perfect for variety as well as those of you who have fussy eaters in your family. There are four pools including a kids pool, splash pool as well as a kids-free pool for some peace and quiet when needed. The hotel is just 300m from Flamingo beach and close to bars and restaurants at the nearby harbour. This hotels offers some incredible deals - we found some as low as just £402pp all inclusive for Winter 2023/24. If you visit between May and October this hotel has “Holiday Village” vibes when it gets a bit more lively and there are more activities on the schedule.

Dubai

Going over to the Middle East is never a bad idea if you are looking for guaranteed heat and sunshine. Dubai is a hugely popular destination, and not always for the wealthier holiday goers as there are some great deals to be found now. With average temps of 30 degrees centigrade in November, it is one of our hottest options. The winter months tend to be much less humid, so like Egypt, if Dubai is on your hit list then the winter is usually the bets time to visit anyway. Aside from the beaches, Dubai is a shoppers paradise. The Dubai Mall has 1,200 shops where shoppers can shop using a coupon code. The mall also has a dancing fountain and offers excellent views of the city. It also hosts the largest aquarium in the world, so lots to do if lazing around on a beach all day is not your thing.

Our hotel top pick:

The Hilton hotel in Dubai "The Walk" meaning it is right in the middle of the mile long promenade filled with boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The hotel has its own private beach and SEVEN restaurants no less, so you won't be short of choices of food. Dubai marina is close by, the perfect place to peruse the billionaires yachts and impressive luxury cruise liners. This hotel shares facilities with the Hilton Jumeirah Resort next door, so there’s loads of choice for food, drinks, and activities. Among the highlights, you’ve got a rooftop cocktail bar, and a beachfront barbecue grill. Activities centre around the beach, where there’s watersports and a kids’ playground.
